Blockstream Updates App With Multisig Account Support

By Roll · Chief of Staff · 18 Oct 2026

Blockstream has made multisig accounts available again in its Bitcoin app as of October 13, 2026. The update offers users two-key and two-of-three configurations.

layer2 scaling stacked platforms

How does a Bitcoin wallet regain a key security tool after it had been removed? Blockstream addressed that question when it restored multisig accounts in its app on October 13, 2026.

The company announced the return through its blog and multisig page. Both account types now operate on Bitcoin. The two-of-three option remains unavailable on Liquid for the time being.

Two Account Types Offered

Users can choose between a two-key 2FA Protected account and a two-of-three account. The first pairs a device key protected by PIN with a server-side key that requires two-factor authentication. The second adds a backup key held only by the user.

The 2FA Protected account lets users approve transactions through an authenticator app, email, SMS or a phone call. This setup keeps day-to-day signing flexible while the server key stays under Blockstream control.

The two-of-three account gives users an extra layer. The backup phrase combined with the device key allows immediate recovery. The 2FA requirement on that account type does not expire.

Key Management and Recovery

Each deposit begins a timelock period. Once that period ends, the device key alone can move the funds. An open-source recovery tool helps users access coins if needed.

Existing legacy multisig account holders see no change. They face no migration requirement and keep the same setup they already use.

Users may also store their own key on a Blockstream Jade hardware device. The Jade pairs directly with the app for added control.

Next Steps and Limitations

Blockstream plans to integrate recovery-tool features straight into the app in future updates. The two-of-three configuration is not yet live on Liquid, though both types function on Bitcoin today.

The restoration means users regain choices that had been removed. No migration is forced on older accounts, and the new options focus on giving individuals more ways to manage keys without relying solely on one party.

Blockstream stated on its multisig page that the service does not allow the company to move funds alone. The design keeps signing requirements split between the user and the service where applicable.

The October 13, 2026 go-live date marks the point when these account types became selectable again. Holders can now create either option inside the app and begin using the restored multisig paths for Bitcoin.

Future work will center on moving recovery steps inside the app itself. That step would reduce the need for separate tools while keeping the same key-splitting structure already in place.

The update keeps the focus on practical account creation. Users select the type that matches their preference for server involvement or full self-custody backup. Both paths remain available without any forced change for those already holding multisig accounts.
