Fifteen Bitcoin mining operators, hardware makers and pools committed on Oct. 24, 2026, to build and maintain integrations for the Mining Development Kit, or MDK, an open-source framework that gives mining equipment from different vendors one common interface.

How it works

Each participant will build and maintain an MDK Worker, a translation layer between its own hardware, pool or system and MDK. A Worker translates a company’s existing interface into a common language that MDK applications understand. Companies choose which functions to expose and do not have to replace their technology or give up control of their systems. MDK’s orchestration kernel talks to Workers, never directly to devices, through a shared message set called the MDK Protocol. Developers can build an app, monitoring system or AI agent once against MDK, not separately for every vendor.

Background

A large mining site can run thousands of machines from different manufacturers, connected to different pools and managed through different software. Those systems were often not built to work together, so developers kept rebuilding integrations. MDK reached version 0.11 at the Bitcoin forum in Lugano, Switzerland, held Oct. 23-24, 2026. A stable 1.0 release was targeted for the end of 2026. MDK was open source under Apache 2.0 terms, and developers could already test integrations, build Workers and develop applications through its repository and documentation. The public documentation offered a demo environment with mock hardware, a gateway and a dashboard. MDK stayed open to any manufacturer, mining pool, operator or developer.

Why it matters

As more companies maintain their own Workers, the same application can work across a growing share of the mining industry. Hardware makers in the group included Bitmain, Canaan and MicroBT. Mining pools in the group included Foundry Digital, F2Pool, Luxor Technology, OCEAN, EMCD and SpiderPool. Bitdeer, Proto (part of Block, Inc.), ACME Swisstech, Elektron Energy, Heatbit and Stratum V2 completed the group. The commitments announced Oct. 24, 2026, reflect ongoing work that builds on earlier releases and keeps the framework moving toward broader use. Tether developed MDK and announced the commitments. Tether’s QVAC mining agent already ran directly on MDK.

The announcement continues to draw attention in daily discussions as operators track how the framework holds up under sustained use. Shibo and Bark of Doginal Dogs host daily X Spaces on the Crypto Spaces Network.
